Unlike regular yoga classes, prenatal yoga classes begin with 10 minutes or so of informal introductions & time to talk with each other in a community circle. Sometimes moms have been sitting all day & are anxious to begin moving their bodies. So why sit around & talk?
The time spent at the beginning of class offers moms a sacred opportunity to build community, nurture friendships with other moms & share knowledge with each other. Hearing each person check in & share new developments about their pregnancy also allows us teachers to get a better sense of what to focus on during the class & how to best attend to each mom's unique needs so class is enjoyable & beneficial for all. Since a woman's experience of pregnancy can change drastically from one week to the next, checking in can also provide a welcome opportunity for reflection.
Sometimes, if I am inspired by a recent birth I attended with a doula client, or if I listened to a particularly stirring TOLABOR podcast, I will present a topic or question to the group. I love the conversations that come up during our community circles. Prenatal yoga class is a safe space where women can feel comfortable sharing frustrations or concerns related to pregnancy, birth & parenting. We work to unravel worries & fears through yogic teachings & learn to empower each other by interacting with respect, listening with open minds & responding without judgement. I am always in awe of the wisdom that is passed on from woman to woman & the learning that takes place when we choose to connect in a supportive environment. I know I learn something new in each class!
So, come to East Side Yoga Mamas prenatal classes to get your body moving, but get ready to move your mind & learn something new too! In the end, you will not only feel empowered & strong in your legs, arms & core--you will feel the strength in your support system & have more confidence in your ability to access & harness all your resources.
Hope to see you on your mat soon!
